![]() Riders may attempt an Orbit more than once, but only their best time will be counted and awarded points. Participants can view the tracks at or directly download them from By joining the Orbit, riders collect points based on the number of Orbits they complete. However, the route must be followed clockwise and exactly according to the GPX track. Each Orbit, created by a member of the Orbit community, is a continuous loop, so riders may begin at any point along the route, at any time they choose. It’s an unsupported, multi-surfaced, ultra-endurance gravel series where from 4 July to 6 September 2020, riders will tackle 16 routes, or “Orbits”, one for each of the 16 German states. Therefore, I scouted a new off-road route around Berlin and contacted 15 other riders (one in each state) to find a way to bring back healthy competition in a completely safe and exciting format, Orbit360 – The First German Gravel Series. This was a big shock and even though I really like riding bikes, I prefer to have some highlights to train for during the season. It didn’t take much time until the races were cancelled. I just came back from the Atlas Mountain Race, ready to train for other ultra endurance events in 2020, like the Race Around Poland or The Transcontinental Race. Thanks to Leonard Bickel's moving account Mawson can be remembered for his vision and dedication that makes him one of the world's great explorers. It was in February, when I first heard about the COVID-19 pandemic. ![]() When the expedition was over Mawson had added more territory to the Antarctic map than anyone else of his time. Mawson's Will is the unforgettable story of one man's ingenious practicality and unbreakable spirit and how he continued his meticulous scientific observations even in the face of death. After losing his second companion and the remaining dogs, Mawson fought his way back from what seemed inescapable death, enduring blistering wind, snow, and cold, thirst, starvation, disease, and snowblindness. Six weeks and 320 miles into the journey, one of his fellow explorers and a team of dogs disappeared into a "bottomless" crevasse, along with the tent, most of the equipment, and all but a weeks supply of food. ![]() ![]() Setting out with two companions and two teams of dogs, Mawson encountered daunting mountains, crevasse-filled glaciers, and sixty-mile-per-hour winds. Mawson was an experienced explorer - in 1908 he had led an important expedition to the South Magnetic Pole - but nothing could have prepared him for what happened on his trek. In 1911 Australian Douglas Mawson chose not to accompany Robert Scott on his trip to the South Pole, but instead set out on a less prestigious expedition to chart fifteen hundreds miles of Antarctic coastline and claim it for the British Crown. Makes Shackleton's Incredible Voyage look like a picnic. Mawson's Will : The Greatest Polar Story Ever Written What books do you forumites like on this broad topic? Is there a great book (memoir, novel, expose) on cycling that gets at why amateurs might love the sport? Are there great books on other sports that leap to mind? I came up with a few potential books right away: Bill McKibben's "Long Distance " perhaps Krakauer's "Into Thin Air." Ian McEwan's recent novel "Saturday" is fairly interesting on the relation between mind and body. The books should shed some light on why one might pursue physical activity (sport, fitness, endurance, adventure) with as much zeal as we pursue intellectual activity. We'd like the books to be on the theme of "life of the mind, life of the body" or something like that. Since we both ride, we thought about a course that would include daily rides and discussion of good books. ![]() The idea is to bring alums back around a weekend of activity and discussion. A friend and I, who both have the good fortune of working at a liberal arts college (and of owning Serottas!), are trying to put together a summer 'course' for alumni of the college. ![]()
